The Owl & The Pussycat

PHPAmy+and+Kyle-35

Diane Moore is a Civil Celebrant who officiates for weddings, funerals and the many celebrations of life. The Owl and the Pussycat poem has become a signature of her content, for it is the story telling via the insight of the couples that reminds her of the journey that is shared.

Aside from the technology she uses for communications in the office and on location, the official documents required  and her beautiful calligraphy pens; Diane also has a Tibetan singing bowl which she uses at the beginning of each ceremony to bring us all into the present moment.

The gentle sound vibrates to bring a sense of ease and focus to what is about to begin.   After each wedding ceremony the couple receive a  copy of their ceremony and the poem “The Owl and The Pussycat” printed on hand-made paper. As a memento of each couple’s special day she also encloses a  gift of an owl and a pussycat figurine which have been collected on Diane’s travels.

We asked Diane a few questions about her days, her life path and local haunts.  We also share the wedding of Amy and Kyle Smith , through the lens of  Paris Hawken Photography, newlyweds whom Diane had the honour of marrying.

What is a typical day.
My days can include meeting with couples, answering emails, writing ceremonies and of course delivering ceremonies on the day. All seem pretty straight forward but let me tell you there are many twists and turns along the way…from tragic to hilarious.

I studied to be a primary teacher, a career that has served me well ,giving me opportunities to travel and revisit whenever I’ve needed to. I have also worked in the hospitality industry as I love all things wine and food but I especially love people. While working at wedding functions  I had the opportunity to see many wedding ceremonies.  I knew I had  something different to offer, an experience as much as a service and thought “I can do this!”  So I did.

Why a celebrant.
Becoming a celebrant is something I’ve wanted to do for over 20 years although at the time celebrants for the Margaret River region were restricted to a quota.  Once my sons left home I decided to train and make this my new career. I love every ceremony I do…. be it a funeral, a wedding, renewing of vows or a naming.

Best place for coffee.
I live in a beautiful apartment in central Dunsborough and at 7:30am you’ll find me at Mealup Cafe enjoying a double shot latte and the paper.

Your down time.

You will find me at the beach, walking, volunteering at a hospice or St.Vinnies or travelling!  I’m constantly entertained by my many friends and I have an AirBnB which makes for plenty of cleaning and laundering, but I love the people I meet.

What Inspires you.
Love.  I never cease to be amazed at its resilience and its ingenuity.  I love the story… each couple’s is different and needs to be told. Love is an adventure and can be found anywhere, with anyone.  There is no formula.
