THE HISTORY Early settler Alfred Bussell was said to have built the Old Broadwater Farm homestead in the early 1800s, from limestone found onsite and from local timbers milled by his successful pioneering family. Alfred married Ellen Heppingstone in 1850 and the newlyweds lived at Broadwater from 1851 to 1857, working the farm and adding their own loving touches to the property.
This hardworking young Bussell couple must have had hard work and resilience in their genes. They eventually moved on to build Margaret River’s historic Ellensbrook and Wallcliffe House properties. The Bussells also had six sons and eight daughters — one of whom was Grace Bussell who, at the age of 16, was involved in the dramatic beach rescue of survivors from the shipwrecked S.S. Georgette.
But that’s only part of the story… Old Broadwater Farm is now in the careful hands of the Packard-Hair family who, for three generations, have lovingly restored the homestead and kept its doors open. The Packard-Hair family is pleased to invite you to come and create your own special memories and connections at this truly beautiful place.
